Wikibuilding Workshop at Universidad Central del Ecuador

In October 2016, 7 BU organized a Wikibuilding Workshop with the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at UCE, with professors Andrea Salazar and Marco Salazar and their 30 students. After great experience of workshops in Europe and China, the seven co-founders of 7BU arrived to Quito a week before the Habitat III Conference to work with the students on La Floresta neighborhood using our open source tool Unlimited Cities DIY. We were working day and night for five days using the power of the collective intelligence at big scale to urban planning and allowing a dialogue between all stakeholders (municipalities, urban professionals and civil society: city dwellers, inhabitants, associations …).

We presented our activities and the results of the workshop at the French Pavilion during Habitat III Conference.

7 Billion Urbanists

Making collective intelligence a universal skill to improve territories

7BU in Quito – Habitat III

Civilizational and environmental challenges to be faced by humanity over the next centuries are so important that they far exceed the abilities of experts and technical solutions alone. What intelligence could exceed amazement or resignation when UN studies show that the 700 million people living in the favelas today will increase to 1.4 billion in 2030?

Fortunately, it is possible to change perspective to address these global challenges with a collective intelligence of a new type, since relied on the power of digital.

How to make the world more habitable? How to break the trends of increasing regional inequalities and the violence they engender? How to make us more resilient to environmental hazards and economic changes? How to become more creative, more open to others? How to help individuals and organizations achieve their full potential while respecting the world different balances and diversity?

Our strong belief is that the medium and long term world improvement is to build here and now, promoting the collective intelligence many initiatives lift-offs that will disseminate virally to achieve projects of increasing scale and complexities.

The 7 Billion Urbanist proposal is simple: to help everywhere in the whole world every individual and every organization to initiate collective intelligence based projects

The transforming power of collective intelligence methods proposed by 7 Billion Urbanist is due to the fact they provide an addictive pleasure through tailored solutions, built by many where conventional methods go from failure to failure with standardized and little appropriable approaches.

When based on collective intelligence, transformations allow gradual learning through doing, enable to gain new knowledge and to enter into exchange dynamics with other places because it is rewarding to share our own successes and give advice.

Collaborative projects like this attract like magnets because each participant is an actor of the changes made and to be made, then new conversations are being created continually and they promote the emergence of new ideas.

Developed in a region, they bring new relationships of trust between people, as well as between professionals and non-professionals, with chain reactions that allow to go beyond the first realizations and thus create valuable lasting social dynamics for the quality of life and attractiveness of a region.

OUR MISSIONS

The Association ambition:

to be at the service of people and organizations who want to transform a region using collective intelligence.

It is important to note that the Association does not develop collaborative projects by itself. The Association helps the development of collaborative projects by individuals and organizations of the countries concerned. If a project promoter wants to develop a collaborative transformation of his region, the Association will first try to find qualified professionals in its members’ network, in the promoter’s country.

The Association has organized its activities into 4 clusters, to EQUIP, to STRUCTURE, to TRAIN and to DISSEMINATE.

TO EQUIP

To hand over research, methods and tools, including digital ones, for effective use in collaborative territorial transformations.

Rather than offering an exhaustive catalogue of solutions, the Association has made the strategic choice to offer a selection of resources the results of which it can guarantee. These solutions are modular and Open Source, thus adaptable at will according to human contexts, geographies, time and space scales. Research, methods and tools allow to fit better into the makings of the city the opportunities enabled by digital and ecological transitions.

TO STRUCTURE

To connect collaborative urban planning projects holders, young professionals, researchers and universities in order to create an exchange of experiences community.

When the Association, jointly with a university, fosters lectures and a workshop integrating stakeholders and civil society during a few days, the purpose is to bring new knowledge as well as to improve the Collaborative Urban Planning process through reflexive visions. The Association goal is to structure the contributions of each of its experiences as well as those of associated research, to make them available to all interested people, professionals and non-professionals.

TO TRAIN

To facilitate access to the contributory city new know-hows to the diversity of the stakeholders of a region: project developers, universities, civil society and interested parties.

The Association members are approached by project developers and designers, but also by inhabitants, communities, public and private interested parties of the region that would like to go towards collaborative methods. However, some are reluctant for fear of a freedom of speech that would open a Pandora's Box of personal selfishness. This is why the Association organizes training workshops based on projects and real issues. Participants can then build their opinion on factual elements. Experience shows that although short, these workshops using collective intelligence are founders of practice changes linked to the quick results brought by these open ways of doing.

TO DISSEMINATE

To accelerate the evolution towards contributing regions by disseminating their philosophies and values through workshops, meetings, conferences, exhibitions, publications and participation in collaborative initiatives.

For 7 Billion Urbanists members, successful ecological and digital transitions within the regions of the planet goes through an infinite number of collaborative projects learning from each other, where the obvious results of collective intelligence will engage strong dynamics towards more equitable occupations of regions and changeovers towards co-invention of more lasting behaviours.
